What is BIS Certification?

Purpose of BIS Certification

The government of India has made BIS certification mandatory for certain purposes. The purposes of BIS certification are :

3.   promoting confidence of the Consumer
4.   providing a safeguard to the health of the public

Types of BIS Certification Schemes

BIS Certification is provided under different types of schemes. List of the types of BIS Certifications Schemes is discussed below:
1.   Normal Procedure - An applicant needs to submit the BIS certification application with necessary documents and fee. BIS certificate shall be issued only when the samples of the products are acceptable. In this procedure, BIS certification is issued within 4 months from the date of submission of application.
2.   Simplified Procedure - Under simplified procedure of BIS Certification, an applicant along with the BIS certification application submits a test report of the sample prepared by a BIS approved lab. If the test report and verification of the factory premises are satisfactory then the only license is granted. BIS certification is granted within 3 months from the date of submission of application.
3.   Tatkal scheme- This type of scheme is meant for all those manufacturers who need BIS standard mark and BIS certificate mandatorily.
4.   ECO mark scheme - Under ECO mark scheme, BIS provides a license to environment-friendly products.
5.   Foreign Manufactures Certification Scheme - BIS introduced this scheme in the year 2000. With the help of this scheme, overseas applicants/foreign manufacturers are entitled to use the BIS mark on their products.

Documents required for BIS Certification

List of the documents required for BIS certification is listed below:
1. Document of Central/State Government (Registration certificate, Memorandum of Articles, Registration certificate from DIC- District Industries Centre
2. Where the applicant applies as a Small Scale Industry- SSI unit, then submission of valid registration certificate from the local/ state authority or from a Chartered Accountant is necessary.
3.   Plant layout
4.   Copy of test reports
5.   List of Manufacturing machinery
6.   Copies of calibration certificates of testing equipment
